the things they REALLY don't tell you when you have a baby

Here is THE list.  As an expectant mom or new mom, you have seen this list in some form before.  The "things that no one tells you."  Well let me tell you what those lists are missing.  The real stuff.

I did not come up with all these gems on my own.  I went to my new mommy friends and asked for their input and they sent in great additions to the list.  Big thanks to: Laura, Alexandra, Rhonda and Gena.

1. It will take you at least 5 hours to watch a movie at home.
2. You will rush through all of your meals as if you were in an eating contest.
3. Sometimes, your baby will be in plain sight when you have sex.  And they might not be sleeping.  Yes, that means watching you.
4. You will compare and contrast your baby against all others and think yours is the Best. Baby. Ever.
5. Things that seem overpriced and worthless end up being what your baby loves most (Toy Bar for BabyBjorn Bouncer - $34,  Sophie le Giraffe  - $20, Happy Baby - priceless).

Mother’s Day, Shmother’s Day

This year is a first for me.  It is the first Mother's Day where I am a mother thanks to my son Aiven, 7 months old and the light of my life.

My views on Mother's Day have always clashed with my mother’s.  I should mention that my mother and I disagree on almost everything, so this is not unusual.  She thinks that since I am now a mother myself I will see it her way.  Unfortunately -- or fortunately, depending on your point of view -- that simply isn't the case.

Cinco de Mayo Cha Cha

I know it isn't a competition, but I really feel the need to brag today. My little man, my sweet, sweet Aiven, has started dancing!!! Not only do we think he is Einstein because of this, but we also think he will be the next Fred Astaire.

Oh, I should mention he only dances to one song. He is very selective. And the song is in Spanish, so I can barely sing it. And when he wants more verses, Alex has to make them up out of thin air. So, Alex and I stand beside the crib singing (horribly) and dancing (Alex does this well; I sort of look like a cartoon character) and we watch Aiven smile, smile and smile some more, and then......he dances!!!!!! I swear it is the cutest thing EVER!

We All Have Our Moments

I crawled back into bed around 6 am this morning and begged Alex to keep Aiven quiet for a couple of hours so I could sleep (his fussing is like missing porridge for this mama bear -- impossible to ignore). I gave him instructions on how to make Aiven's breakfast. Rice cereal, a bit of hot water, and then some cold water so it isn't too hot, add a mashed banana into it, and then mix in some prune from the pouch in the fridge. He was half asleep, so I asked him to repeat it to me. He did.

As he left the bedroom, I yelled out for him to please take some applesauce out of the freezer. I forgot to take it out the night before and I usually feed it to Aiven for dessert at lunch and dinner.

Orange Bike, The Trilogy: Part One

After several months of mourning the loss of green bike, Alex decided it was time to get a new one. He didn't really want another $20 bike, but he didn't want a top of the line bike either. Nor even a middle of the road one it would seem. Alex went online and purchased a lovely orange cruiser bike from Amazon for $100.

The bike arrived IN A BOX! Like IKEA furniture. But with worse instructions on how to put it together. The directions came in 14 languages, so perhaps they were intelligible in Albanian.

I was not going to get sucked into this one! He was on his own.
